Sonus Faber(소너스파베르) Aida 톨보이 스피커
뒤 길이가 80cm에 육박하고 키가 6척에 가까운 330kg의 거구이다. 두터운 적층식 합판이 옆판을 감싸고, 앞면은 장인의 가죽 세공으로 덧댄 명품의 이미지를 가지고 있다. 앞에서 보면 3웨이 4스피커이지만 인클로저 속 안에 32cm의 대형 우퍼가 들어 있고, 더 소누스 파베르와 마찬가지로 뒷면에 음장감을 만들어 내기 위한 2웨이 구조의 사운드 필드 셰이퍼(Sound Field Shaper) 이론의 유닛이 박혀 있다.
작년 더 소누스 파베르라는 전혀 소누스 파베르 답지 않은 무시무시한 괴물을 접했을 때 놀라운 성능에 감탄하면서도 마음 한구석에는 왠지 모를 아쉬움이 있었다. 너만은 그냥 순순하게 남아 주었으면 하는 이기적인 감정이랄까? 스트라디바리를 만들고 이제 끝이라고 생각한 우리들에게 소누스 파베르는 전작에 이어 다시 한 번 상위 모델인 아이다를 선보인다. 가격은 더 소누스 파베르보다 1억 정도나 싸다. 그래 봤자 아무나 살 수 있는 스피커는 아니지만, 슈퍼 리치(Super Rich)가 아니어도 구입할 수는 있는 스피커이다.
사진으로 보면 원통형의 그리 크지 않은 스피커로 보이지만 뒤 길이가 80cm에 육박하고 키가 6척에 가까운 330kg의 거구이다. 두터운 적층식 합판이 옆판을 감싸고, 앞면은 장인의 가죽 세공으로 덧댄 명품의 이미지를 가지고 있다. 앞에서 보면 3웨이 4스피커이지만 인클로저 속 안에 32cm의 대형 우퍼가 들어 있고, 더 소누스 파베르와 마찬가지로 뒷면에 음장감을 만들어 내기 위한 2웨이 구조의 사운드 필드 셰이퍼(Sound Field Shaper) 이론의 유닛이 박혀 있다. 상급기처럼 각도가 조절되지는 않지만 각각의 게인을 조절하는 방식은 똑같이 들어 있고, 트라이와이어링이 가능한 단자를 가지고 있다. 전작의 옆면에 달린, 근래 보기 드문 대형 우퍼를 생각하면 이 정도면 애교에 불과하다 생각되지만, 그래도 역시 울리기 만만해 보이지는 않는다. 하긴 이 정도 스피커를 쓰면서 몇 백만원짜리 앰프로 구동시킬 일은 없어 보인다. 그런 기준에서 본다면 울리기 어려운 스피커는 아닌 듯싶다.
유닛은 이번에 완전히 바뀐 것 같다. 더 소누스 파베르와 공통점을 찾아보려 이것저것 비교해도 같은 것은 없어 보인다. 제공된 사양을 보면 모두 소누스 파베르에서 디자인한 유닛이라고 하고, 각각 차단된 공간에서 공진을 없애고 순수한 음을 만들어 내는데, 중점을 둔 설계임을 알 수 있다. 필자 개인적인 사견으로 보면, 이전의 소누스 파베르는 정성스레 만든 인클로저가 마치 악기의 통처럼 울리면서 공간의 이미지를 만들었다면, 최근 선보인 이 하이엔드 두 기종들은 진동을 모두 없애버린 하이엔드 스피커 사운드에, 사운드 필드 셰이퍼 기술이라 칭하는 뒷면에 붙어 있는 북셀프 크기의 스피커를 통해 공간 이미지를 만들어내는 듯하다. 일종의 페이크(Fake)인지, 아니면 트위크(Tweak)인지 모르지만, 확실히 뒷면 유닛을 모두 구동을 중지시키고 비교하면, 이 기술이 무미건조한 하이엔드 음을 얼마나 풍부하고 찰지게 변화시키게 되는지 간단히 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 그 효과는 오히려 더 좋은 것 같다(물론 리스닝 룸의 상태에 따라 상대적이지만 대부분 긍정적 효과가 있을 듯싶다).
더 소누스 파베르와 굳이 비교하자면 스케일 면에서는 조금 뒤지는 듯하지만 솔직히 둘 다 좋고, 둘 다 커 보인다. 스케일에 콤플렉스가 있다면 모를까 둘의 차이는 있지만 둘 다 부족함 없이 넉넉하다. 아이다를 상급기와 비교하면서 박력이 떨어진다거나 스케일이 작다라고 말한다는 것은 버핏이 소로스에게 '너는 돈이 없다'고 말하는 것과 다를 바가 없어 보인다. A•B 테스트로 비교한다면 차이야 있지만, 두 기종의 하이엔드의 특성은 이미 나의 변별 능력을 모두 넘어가 버렸는지도 모른다. 오히려 아이다에게는 이전의 스피커가 들려주던 간드러지는 고역의 느낌이 더욱 강하다. 송진가루 폴폴 날리는 현의 움직임이나 칼라스의 칼칼한 고역의 표현은 오히려 더 좋지 않나 싶기도 하다. 그래서 나에게는 오히려 아이다가 더 눈이 간다. 물론 나로서는 모두 다 여우의 신 포도이지만, 아이다가 조금 낮은 곳에 매달려 조금 덜 시어보이는 건지도 모른다. 마치 스트라디바리가 이전작의 부족한 하이엔드 요소를 끌어 올린 하이엔드 성향의 소누스 파베르라면 아이다는 하이엔드 스피커의 부족한 감성을 채워주는 소누스 파베르 성향의 하이엔드 스피커인 듯하다. 가격이나 소리의 성향 모두 스트라디바리와 더 소누스 파베르의 중간적인 입장에 서 있다.
소누스 파베르는 익히 알려진 바와 같이 경영진이 바뀌었고 만드는 장인은 그대로라 하지만 조금씩 색깔이 바뀌고 있다. 그리고 세계 경제가 어렵다고 하는데도 비싼 스피커는 줄을 지어 나오고 있다. 아마 더 이상은 스트라디바리로는 하이엔드 오디오의 세계에 명함을 내밀지 못하게 된 건지도 모른다. 이탈리아 수입차 가격이 되어 버린 스피커들을 보면 내심 찹찹한 느낌도 들지만 정성스런 만듦새와 으르렁거리면서도 부드럽게 달려 나가는 모습을 보면 나도 모르게 탄성이 나온다. 아이다는 누군가에게는 화려하고 장중한 오페라이기도 하고, 누군가에게는 얻을 수 없는 사랑의 비극에 대한 노래이기도 하다.

STEALTH ULTRAFLEX SYSTEM
Patented system that allows a big reduction of the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and a better bass extension while minimizing distortion and eliminating spurious vibration coming from the air passage inside the reflex duct. Aida Stealth Ultraflex system has a high ratio between width and height and allows reducing the dimensions of acoustic chambers
TUNED MASS DAMPER
The TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) is a device normally used in the biggest world’s skyscrapers and consists in some suspended masses placed inside of the speakers; while vibrating in antiphase, the TMD erases main vibrations and allows a clearer bass reproduction and a better silence reproduction.
ZERO VIBRATION TRANSMISSION
The purpose of this technology is decoupling the loudspeaker system from the ground, avoiding spurious vibration to spread in the listening environment. Springs and elastomers are placed on the base; their decoupling compliance is carefully calculated in reason of the weight of the speaker and allows a more powerful performance of the down firing infrawoofer and a perfect tuning of the entire loudspeaker system.

TWEETER
Sonus faber “Arrow Point” DAD (Damped Apex Dome, synthesis of the classic dome and ring transducer) H28 XTR-04. A Sonus faber designed 28 mm moving coil driver, with Sonus faber’s vibration optimized mechanical interface. The ultra-dynamic linearity is given by the Neodymium motor system. Implemented with a natural wood acoustic labyrinth rear chamber, a mechanical anti-resonator designed for this application.
MIDRANGE
Sonus faber M18 XTR-04. A Sonus faber designed 180 mm Neodymium magnet system ultra-dynamic linearity midrange. CCAW wire is used on a composite former “eddy current free” voice coil. The dynamically linear magnetic field motor incorporates triple Kellog/Goeller rings. A special custom diaphragm is made with a real-time air dried non-pressed blend of traditional cellulose pulp, Kapok, Kenaf and other natural fibers, developed according to the most natural sound. To further inhibit any residual cone coloration, we are using a transparent viscous surface damping coating. The basket is thoroughly optimized to eliminate any resonance, fully CNC machined from solid billets of Avional and Gunmetal. The combination of the two different metals allows eliminating any mutual resonance. The same way as the tweeter, the midrange is decoupled from the main baffle board and designed synergistically with its optimized “acoustic chamber”. A special coaxial anti-compressor is used, designed to remove cavity resonances and distortions.
WOOFERS
Sonus faber W22XTR-12. A pair of Sonus faber designed 220 mm Neodymium magnet system woofers, lightweight “sandwich” cone structure (high-tech syntactic foam core and two external surface skins of cellulose pulp) woofers. Each of them is integrated in its own acoustically amorphous “stealth reflex” chamber. Designed to blend perfectly with the special midrange and, at the same time, to have absolute definition in their range: the sandwich structure with outer paper pulp skins has the same sonic character of the midrange cone. A powerful long stroke motor system with a 2” controlled “eddy current” voice coil is implemented for high speed, performance and linearity.
INFRA WOOFER
Sonus faber SW32XTR-08. A Sonus faber designed 320 mm Neodymium magnet system infra woofer, sandwich cone structure with high-tech syntactic foam core and two external surface skins in Nano Carbon Fiber for maximum rigidity and light weight. An impressive 4” voice-coil, inside and outside winding design to take advantage of the magnet field strength and to control the Lorentz currents proportionally to the excursion obtaining this way the tightest available lows. To perfectly match the low-end performance to different listening rooms it is possible to adapt the SPL of the infra woofer.
SOUND FIELD SHAPER
The patented “Sound field Shaper” technology, allows the control of the direct/reverberant radiation ratio of the Aida. The sound field shaping module can be SPL optimized.
SOUND FIELD SHAPER TWEETER
Sonus faber “Arrow Point” DAD 29XTR2. A Sonus faber designed 29 mm moving coil driver. The ultra-dynamic linearity is given by the new Neodymium motor system.

CROSS-OVER
Non-resonant crossover, optimized amplitude/phase response for optimal space/time performance. “Paracross topology” for maximum transparency. The impedance at low frequencies is controlled for a clear and friendly amplifier performance. Double staggered transfer function low frequency/room interface optimized filter. Highest quality is used in terms of the components: last generation Mundorf Supreme Evo, Aluminium Oil and Silver/Gold/Oil capacitors, Mundorf Supreme resistors and Jantzen Cross-coils inductors. Cross-over frequencies: 55Hz - 150 Hz - 200Hz - 3000.
